If you're handy with a soldering pencil, you could try replacing the 
8K X 8 SRAM chip which stores the NVRAM with a 32K X 8 SRAM chip. 
I'm not sure if that would solve the problem, because I don't know if 
Apple implemented the extra address line, but it would be nice to 
know whether it does or not.  The pin out on the chips is the same 
(except the NC pins vs. extra address pins).
