Are you trying to start a flame war? Heh heh! I bet!

Really, though, all of us with an attention span of more than 5 minutes
knows that a Mac will outlast and outvalue most computers. Ask me about my
fleet of Quadras which are running IP NAT and other services for small
businesses all around NYC sometime...

An i486 is overkill for IP NAT for a modem. You could even do IP NAT for
the modem nicely on the Mac running NetBSD and Samba at the same time -
Samba is pretty configurable, so you can have Samba not listen on the
public IP, and so you won't have any SMB related security issues.
