speaking from firshand experince, os x's UFS is anything *but* fast
(the F in FFS).  It's a stale old UFS from the early NeXT era.  No log
file system, no softupdates, no fast anything.   It's nearly unuseable
if you are doing anythign fs intensive ( compiling, for example ).
