From a PM 4400:

[cab:~] edljedi% sysctl -n hw.model
603ev (Revision 201)
[cab:~] edljedi% sysctl -n hw.machine
macppc

From an OS X box running on a 733 G4 (just out of my curiosity):

[fileserver:~] edljedi% sysctl -n hw.model
PowerMac3,5
[fileserver:~] edljedi% sysctl -n hw.machine
Power Macintosh

Such a difference.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
