The easy way: Install a Mac OS 8 (or higher) on the hard disk and
run SystemDisk from there . Worked fine for me with the same hardware.

I'm not sure I understand you correctly but you can not simply 
copy a *.smi to a disk using dd. AFAIK you need Mac OS for this. 
You mount a .smi image by clicking twice with the mouse in the 
Finder.
