I'm sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but at least my Beige G3 (2.0f1)
doesn't understand things like 'boot scsi/sd@0:0' directly. It needs
to have a correct setting for 'boot-device' in the nvram. Try

setenv boot-device scsi/sd@0:0
boot

Anyway. I'm running -current on my Beige G3, so I'm fairly sure it's not
a conflict between firmware and bootloader.
