In the interest of clarity, here's what happens. It's not that I see 
unsynchronized video or a black screen: I see a pure white screen with 
nothing else displayed. 

If I read michael wolfson's update to detecting video cards in OF, I do 
indeed have an OF-compliant card (it reports its identity as an ATI Mach 64). 
So it's perplexing: I have specified the physical address, the name, the 
alias,  and all combinations I can think of. This combination has worked as a 
console in LinuxPPC and OS X (yes, I had OS X on a 9500). 

I'm not as concerned now that it boots properly (that's all I needed the 
console for).
