it would be worth looking at the fink project, I think. It uses the debian 
tools to fetch source or binary pkgs, resolves dependencies, and is very very 
active: almost 600 pkgs already done. 

there is also a GNU-Darwin  project that's working on porting the FreeBSD 
ports collection: from  my experience, fink is the one to go with.
