I don't really understand the question at this point, sorry.

  For setting up OF variables, output-device and input-device, either
at BootVars or at OF promt, the effect is the same. The same values
are good for both situations.  Is your question asking above ?

 Anyway you may need 'reset-all' to get those value effective if you
are setting at OF prompt.
