It really doesn't seem to matter.  Most of the PCI Power Macs don't 
seem to care which slots the DIMMs go into.

That said, if you match pairs of DIMMs in slot a1-b1 or a2-b2, etc, the 
machines will do memory interleaving, which may increase performance 
a bit.

The Apple TIL (or Knowledge Archive or whatever they're calling it) has a 
few articles regarding memory interleaving and memory requirements for
