My modems seem to work with this patch for two type
of machines,

G4/400-AGP
iBook/SE, 1999
(Both are some old types :-)

with cu -l /dev/tty00,
I got following after dialed to local Access Point.

CONNECT 38400
(But this could be some 56k.)

# I needed to change owner of /dev/tty00 to uucp.wheel.
