With wdc reverted to 1.12, I lasted through a build of the world and
then of emacs and several other packages, and still haven't seen any
trouble. Much of that is over NFS (though the package object
directories are local), so it's not totally local-disk-abusing, but it
is making use of the installed binaries and installing new ones.

Haven't tried this.

For random statistics-gathering purposes, building the world over NFS
over 802.11, with no special options to "make build", took just about
five hours.
