|  G4 400Mhz, very first generation (sawtooth, ATI128) sound get to the
|  external speaker through the analog headphone minijack.

  Same here. It plays fine on the internal speaker (for small values
of fine, of course), but when fiddling with mixerctl, it mutes the
internal speaker and nothing comes out the external jack.
