I think you can use MacOS and some system control applet (hmm, this must be
in the FAQ) to program the power manager to "power on when mains return".
This setting should be persistent.

So after "shutdown -p now" you'll have to remove mains, wait a few seconds and
reconnect it, but then it should power on - as it should after power failure.

Not elegant, but probably worth trying.
