I have an 8500; All I really know about the video device is that OF calls it
Chaos Control, though I doubt its an ATI mach64 since then I might see an
identifiable ATI chip on board. There is a BT#### chip that controls the
ntsc/pal video stuff. I havn't got NetBSD running on it as such, but a year
back I ran debian/linux which supported the device as a framebuffer which
allowed a framebuffer server to work with it under Xfree86 3x.

Currently I use a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 PCI which I flashed to OF rom which is
free from 3dfx but beta. The card is pretty cheep right now, $50? Its not a
terrible choice, though I hear there are better cards for specific 2D
accelleration.

a friend of mine uses an iXmicro ultimate Rez in his 8600. He really wouldn't
suggest it for unix support though... The OF console doesn't work with it BTW
(it seems) so it may just cause more problems. [this is incase you were
tempted by bargin bin shopping at $20].
