There is something wrong with the ethernet driver on this here
G4. It's one of those gigabit ethernet machines. The ethernet port
is found

| gm0 at pci3 dev 15 function 0: Ethernet address 00:30:65:70:b3:9a
| gm0: interrupting at irq 41
| ukphy0 at gm0 phy 0: Generic IEEE 802.3u media interface
| ukphy0: BCM5400 1000baseTX PHY (OUI 0x000818, model 0x0004), rev. 7
| ukphy0: 100baseTX, 100baseTX-FDX, auto

However, the omission of 10base-something on the above line is
strange. And also the omission of 1000baseTX, since the name of
the PHY does imply it :)

And indeed, 10baseT does not work, even though it seems to probe
it all right (ifconfig said "Ethernet autoselect (10baseT)"). It
just does _not_ work, I saw no packets coming out. I had to interpose
a 10/100 switch I luckily had lying around to make it talk to my network.
