I have tried the similar thing. My machine is StarMax 3000/240,
PPC603e, and OF 2.0.2.

(1)
boot fd:0 ata/ata-disk@0:0
open ata/ata-disk@0:0: Input/out error
open ata/ata-disk@0:0/netbsd Input/out error
Boot:

(2)
boot fd:0 ata/ata-disk@

this boots fine. But I am not sure this makes sense, because
my ata/ata-disk has normal boot block installed.
But as far as my screen says, it reads ofwboot.elf from fd:0
and read kernel from ata/ata-disk (wd0a).

Emmanual, please play with the OF parameter,
