Ah, OK.  The key point is that it's not newfs that blows away the 
Apple Partition Map, it's installboot.

Once you have an install kernel booted you just 'newfs /dev/rwd0a', 
mount and go on about the business of my earlier procedure. 
Everything should be fine if you can just give OF and ofwboot the 
right arguments.  You will need to know the partition number of the 
A/UX root & user partition in the Apple Partition Map, but you can 
probably just 'boot hd:0,ofwboot.xcf -a' in OF and then try 
"hd:<n>,netbsd" for n >= 5 to find what works.  (Assuming you have 
everything else set up properly.)  Then you can set the OF variables 
to boot there directly.
