Well, I just plugged a monitor into the machine for the first time
in five months (uptime was 151 days in the end) to pull it up to
1.5, made sure it'd come back up after a shutdown -hp now and a few
seconds wait, and not only did it bring the drive up fine, but I had
no monitor syncing problems.

Considering I don't have macos on any drives connected to that
machine, which means I'd have to hack up a version of System Disk
and burn it to a CD (erm, unless I remember in which closet I
stashed my old SCSI zip drive, I guess, but it could well be in
another state), AND considering I never use the machine's console
except when it's having trouble (I was paranoid on this upgrade, but
I didn't really need to even move it from its perch in the
cs.swarthmore.edu server room), I'll pass on figuring out its timing
as long as it doesn't give me too much trouble.
