Look in
<http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/macppc/SystemDisk-tutorial/of105patch.htm
l> in the Guru Method section. It gives you the text for both of the
patches that I know are useful. The FAQ also has a new one-page
tutorial on nvedit which looks nice.

How useful depends on your hardware. I have a 7500 and an 8500 that
don't really need the video patch, though they are more consistent
with it. I have a second 8500 that just doesn't work without it at
all. My 7500 seems to need the wBoot patch about 50% of the time
when booted directly from power-up and the other two run MacOS a lot
or aren't fully set up yet so I can only tell it's not needed after
the disks have spun up.

Good luck.

Oh yes: the 1710 should make a good PC monitor if nothing else.
