Well, it died.  I found more information elsewhere about OFW 1 trying to
find a System file in the HFS partition, which rather sucks(!), so the
hfsiso version is out for OFW 1:

:     ftp://ftp.duh.org/pub/NetBSD/macppcboot-hfsiso.iso.gz

I'm investigating the alternatives now.
