Last I checked, LinuxPPC does _not_ work on pre-PCI PowerMacs. 
However, MkLinux should and does.  You might want to take a look at 
their code.  I don't know if BootX handles pre-PCI powermacs either, 
but since it doesn't require open firmware, I can't imagine why not.
