I had a similar problem logging into a NetBSD box from a Mac using
dataComet.  I eventually figured out that pressing ^J after entering the
login name, then pressing Return, then typing the password and pressing
Return after that, let me in.  I suppose there's probably some setting
in dataComet (and NCSA telnet, too) that changes the line delimeters it
sends when you press Return..
