Hmm, this is basically what I did on my iMac with 1.4.1 and that worked fine.
Maybe your syssrc.tgz got corrupted somehow?

'su' to root (don't do this from single-user mode) and run 'newaliases'.

This really should be part of the final explanatory text in sysinst; every
1.4.x system I've installed in the last year has required this.
