Yeah, it's a catch 22, and there's no way around it. The web site
lists hints on dealing, but in general, the further from -current you
are, the more pain you will have.

If we had more snapshots, that would make it easier, because you could
just upgrade to the most recent snapshot, and then build current from
there.
