"All" old ftp programs defaulted to ASCII mode and had to be told to use
binary.

Once upon a time, the net was primarily used for sending text files between
machines with different newline formats and even different character sets
(ever heard of EBCDIC?). Network links were so slow and relatively expensive
that if you needed to send a binary file, you usually shipped people a tape.
