It is necessary to use binary mode when downloading all of the big files,
including the .tgz files, although some FTP programs may do it for you.

ASCII vs. "Image" mode in FTP is one of those annoying gotchas about FTP.

I generally force binary mode for any file that I don't know is a text file,
and it saves me a lot of grief.
