Just for the record: The problem has disappeared, and a couple of days
ago, I installed the boot blocks and -- hurray -- the disk was now
bootable.

I'm not exactly sure what made the difference, but having bothered
the list several times with this problem, I thought that I may as
well mention that it is now gone :-)
