The same problem has happened to me.  I've gotten these time outs and
weird sync errors when trying to access a Quantum "Fireball" 1GB drive
on a Power Computing PowerWave.  I haven't had any problems putting a
disk label on, and newfs'ing a Syquest 270 on the same SCSI bus (no
weird time outs or any other nonsense from the controller).
