Just to add on this, not necessarily helpful:
There’s a modern replacement for the unobtainium Asante box, at least in Germany it never shows up, and if it does then for incredible prices.
The RaSCSI project added Ethernet-over-SCSI-capabilities a while ago, and it’s open source, so the "hardware" implementation of it is known. That may help in writing drivers for it.

Boards are available e.g. from Tindie and (in Germany) from Samplerspa.de. Besides these "hats" a Raspberry Pi is needed.
