I have been trying to install NetBSD 3.1 on a Powerbook 180 with a single
480MB root partition. I am using the generic kernel and the traditional
method of installation. When trying to boot into the installed system
everything looks fine until after the various devices are initialised, then
comes:

root file system type ffs
exec /sbin/init: error 8
init: trying /sbin/oinit
exec /sbin/oinit: error 2
init: trying /sbin/init.bak
exec /sbin/init.bak:error 2
init: not found
panic: no init
Stopped in pid 1.1 (init) at netbsd: cpu_Debugger=0x6 unlk a6

I used the installer program to mini-shell: ls /sbin/init

It seems to be there. What am I missing here?

Tom
