As a late follow-up...

Thanks to the help of Hubert Feyrer, I managed to slip in a chapter to the
mac68k INSTALL document that documents the sysinst problem and a
workaround. It has been pulled up to the netbsd-3, netbsd-2 and netbsd-2-1
branches and will be in upcoming releases.
