I don't think any Macintosh graphics hardware could display odd colour 
depths - the only one I know which can do this is the Amiga - it can do 
anything between 1 and 6 resp. 8 bit. X11 shouldn't really have a 
problem with this - the graphics board in my HP9000/345 does 6bit 
colour ( but nothing else ), some programs found it odd to find 64 
colour cells though.
