In my case (I was at least one person who reported this) the issue was a 
lack of RAM. The machine had only 8Mb. I managed to install with the 
Mac-based installer, and all worked fine.

Then I tuned my VM based on the VM Tuning Guide below in order to kepp the 
kernel from constantly swapping everything out pre-emptively.
