but the package tools can be updated from pkgsrc as well. i just went to 
the pkg_tools/pkg_install directory, typed make install and after that i 
could add, make and install any packages again. oh, and i had to create 
the .work/gcc symlink myself during the pkg_install build for some 
reason, like somebody suggested in another thread.

(this was on hpcmips, but the problem was exactly the same so the 
solution should too i guess)
