My pkgsrc used to work, but at some point in the last few months, an
update via annon CVS caused a problem and I started getting the --K
error. I just tried Allen's suggestion, but it failed with:

...
checking for gcc.. /usr/pkgsrc/pkgtools/pkg_install/work/.gcc/bin/gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C
compiler cannot create executables
See 'config.log' for more details
*** Error code 77

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/pkgsrc/pkgtools/pkg_install
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/pkgsrc/pkgtools/pkg_install

I'll try the Kazuyuki Inanaga fix next.
