This is correct (the 540c has a 68LC040). I used a 540c to install  NetBSD
1.5 on an external disk. It booted. It could do simple things. It was a
nice proof of concept. However, as noted, the lack of floating point
support means it's not much use ('ls -l' generates a seg fault). I never
bothered to install the X binaries, so can't comment on how that might (or
might not) work.
