The original question was about a 68040 CPU and the original answer is fine for that.

Else, if you have a 68030 (full, complete) and at last a minimum of 8 MB of RAM (don’t remember exactly.) you will be able to run
Mac OS 7.5.5.

For 68020 owners, the answer is around 7.5 (7.5. something ?)


Last, but not least, PPC owners who cannot run MacOS X can run up to MacOS 9.1 (not 9.2 nor higher...)
