This was happening to me awhile ago on one of my SPARC machines; took me
weeks to figure out what was going on.

Do you in fact have swap space configured? (swapctl -l)

When compiling large stuff like the kernel, does 'swapctl -l' actually
show some swapping taking place?

If not, are you using actual disk as swap, or a swapfile, or nothing?
