How long does it take to just read the file?
(Something like "time dd if=filename of=/dev/null bs=64k" will test this)
As Dave Huang pointed out, the disk driver is not yet using DMA on this
machine. Anyone have a machine want to work on this? It would be nice
to have... I don't have an 840AV or 660AV... ;-)

The Farallon is not. I have a couple of Asante cards that are at least
almost working. They are supported by the if_sm driver (sm* at nubus?),
but unfortunately, they can only do half-duplex 100Mbit. I haven't seen
one of the Farallon cards and don't know what chipset they use (the
Asante uses the SMC FEAST).
