Ok, I turned "console" and "tty00" in /etc/ttys "on", and "ttyE0" off.
Then I booted (NON-single user) and it got past the "getty[174]:
/dev/ttyE0: Device not configured" problem, and it typed (on the
serial console):
Wed Jan 3 09:23:11 PST 2001
login:
I thought I was home free, but I typed "root" and a CR - it didn't
echo, but appended to the line with:
login: Jan 3 09:24:37 login: ROOT LOGIN (root) ON tty00
Jan 3 09:24:37 login: ROOT LOGIN (root) ON tty0
Jan 3 09:24:37 NetBSD 1.5 (GENERICSBD) #0: Sun Nov 19 14:25:41 PST
2000 Welcome to NetBSD!
NetBSD/mac68k (Amnesiac) (console)
login:
...and then hung! (At least it was no longer responsive to the keyboard)
The console on the machine remained blank, and the main machine was
also nonresponsive to the keyboard.
