Look for a package called "dt" in pkgsrc. You may have to pay close
attention to the README's, etc regarding SE/30 video (don't remember,
never had one). That gives you mouse support, faster console video,
multiple consoles, etc. Very nice if you don't want the overhead of
X.
Haven't followed lately, for all I know the latest snapshots may
support virtual consoles natively. But dt is quite nice.
