Thanks to all who replied concerning the question regarding virtual 
memory limits, especially Hans-Christian, who hit the "nail on the 
head". The command under bash ulimit -d <a big number> worked very 
well. This question arose in relation to the installation of the 
imlib library, it crapped out with a virtual memory exhausted error, 
the above command work a treat.
