While 6-24 ms does seem rather high for a local ethernet, I guess it's
fine if it works :)

No real suggestions... I don't have much experience with Linux's
ipchains stuff, but I did set it up for a friend once by following the
HOWTO on it, and it seemed rather obtuse compared to ipf/ipnat :) You
might try running tcpdump on the Linux side, or on both machines to see
what's going on.
