To add excessive verbosity ;) , you can specify in /etc/syslog.conf what
should be logged and what not, and where it should be written to. See
syslog.conf(5) for log levels and categories.

syslogd used to prefer tabs in its config file over spaces; that may still
be something to be aware of.
