What about the permissions you've set for that directory?
And while your at it take a peek in /etc/group etc.etc.

(You mean vipw which brings you in the /etc/master.passwd)

Yep, use the installer to cpout/cpin the /etc/master.passwd and change with
your fav. Mac text editor. Beware of keeping it a Unixfile. Specially
SimpleText puts Macreturncharacters in your file........messy.
(to avoid this in vi use ctr-j for return)
