Well I figured out what my problem was, I copied my installation from one
hard drive over to another (bigger) one and I forgot to maintain file
permissions so /var/spool/lock wasn't world writeable so pppd couldn't
create a lock file for the device.  I have this naggin feeling like this
permissions issue is going to haunt me going forward, any other places
that I should change/check permissions?
