Well, it looks like I have confirmed the problems of my IIci being totally
unable to boot.

It hobbles along using MacOS 7.5.3 without too much trouble, but I only can
use SCSI ID 0 and 6. If a device, of any kind, is plugged in on any other
id, it shows up on 6. If it shows up. This is of course, assuming the HD
is on ID 0 which is where it stays.

I kept getting the same freeze right after it would unmount the SyQuest.
I did find somewhere a tidbit abou Vmemory and 32bit addressing, but fixing
that little issue did not solve the freeze.

So, I had a copy of the installers for debian-68k as well, so i tried it,
froze a the exact same point.

So, I believe that the SCSI controller is somewhat toasted.

In any case, I'll have a Quadra 610 soon to experiment with some more.
Until that shows up at my doorstep, I guess the IIci will have to do with
the likes of NetPresenze, QuidProQuo, EIMS, MacDNS, and IPNR.

If anyone has a spare MB for a IIci that has a funcional SCSI bus that they
want to give away.... :)

Thanks for all your help, and I shall be back. I won't give up hope.
