Depends on what you do... gcc is not a speed daemon, especially with -O2.
I'd suspect Think C 5 or an early Metrowerks compiler is faster.

An SE/30 "under" X11 is about as "fast" as an SE under System 7 -- with way
less functionality.

It's networking/server stuff where Unices shine. And shell work, maybe.
