/ORIGINAL MESSAGE
/ Hello, I have an older model Apple Macintosh, that is the Quadra 605.
/ (It's not one of those types of (newer) macs that is capable of running
/ pc software) I own freebsd but they told me it wouldn't work.......
/ They referred me to you.
/ Does NetBSD run on my Quadra605 mac???
/
/The Reply led me to you................................
Yes your quadra 605 will run NetBSD. Mine has been for quite a number
of months (quite happily, I might add).
The difference between a 68040 and a 68LC040? The "lc" chip lacks an
integrated floating point processor -- the "Full 040" includes one. The
math functions that a 68040 does in hardware must be performed via
software emulation in the 68LC040. For certain things it's much slower.
Your machine came (as stock) with a 68LC040. They're pretty cheap to
find these days -- you'd be well to consider getting one. They're quite
easy to install and your machine will be a better unix box with it.
I upgraded the 040 chip in my machine long before I ever heard of
NetBSD, so I've never run it with the LC chip. With the full 040, it's
fine.
